With more extreme events likely to occur, it is more important than ever for Victoria to have effective arrangements in place to manage the risks facing the State and to assist people to be safe in the face of adversity and uncertainty.  We manage smaller emergencies relatively well, but we need legislative, administrative and cultural change to break down the organisational ‘silos’ that inhibit an ‘all hazards, all agencies’ approach to managing major emergencies.

The findings of both the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission and the Victorian Floods Review show that Victoria’s existing legislation, policy, governance and operational arrangements for crisis and emergency management need modifying and upgrading to meet the challenges ahead.

Major reform is happening all around us.  We are entering a New Era of emergency management

The New Era will bring changes in the ways in which emergency service organisations and Government agencies:

  • share a common understanding of emergency management;
  • train and exercise together;
  • work to common operating standards;
  • share and use the same operational picture; and
  • rely on equipment and systems that work together.

It is critical that all stakeholders keep up-to-date with the latest in legislation, policy, procedures, systems and technology.

The Emergency Management Conference 2012 will present a view of how and where we will be moving forward as government and communities embrace ‘New Era Emergency Management’.

About EMC

The Emergency Management Conference (EMC) is the annual conference presented by the Emergency Services Foundation to provide a forum for the exchange of the valuable information gained by emergency services workers in the line of duty, and in research.

The conference is also the Emergency Services Foundation's annual fund raiser to ensure it can continue to provide support to families of emergency service workers and scholarships for emergency services personnel to study relevant topics, and contribute to the various professions. An ever growing trade exhibition showcases products of interest to the emergency services agencies at the conference.

Delegates will attend from all emergency services, Federal, State and Local government departments and community groups.
