emergency media and public affairs (empa) conference

Emergency Media and Public Affairs (EMPA) runs an annual conference intended to share experience and knowledge amongst crisis communicators from both government and industry.

EMPA was formed in 2006 from a discussion between the University of Southern Queensland and the Queensland Department of Emergency Services about a way of developing emergency communication skills and sharing experiences in order to learn.

The EMPA 2011 Conference in Canberra was attended by a record number of delegates. EMPA is now recognised internationally, and offers a range of member services, including professional accreditation.  EMPA's R&D Committee also funds numerous research projects through Australia's major universities.
